Tenerife winter sun in 4 days

Quick Summary

The main aim from this holiday was a relaxing, sun filled break. Because we are having a baby, we had to limit ourselves to the pregnancy friendly activities. This trip was perfect for that and because it was a bit off season it was also value for money.

When

March 2nd week. This is a off season by any standards and so you get decent deals. Weather was great during the day (around 20 deg C). There were some clouds but clear blue skies greeted us everyday. Once the sun went down, it got colder (around 10-15 deg C).

Itinerary

Day 1 - Travel in and sit at the Beach
Day 2 - Dolphins and whales
Day 3 - Mount Teide and Las Americas
Day 4 - Goodbye to sun and trip back

Where we stayed

H10 Costa Adejo

After a bit of research, we stayed at Costa Adejo. The general feedback was that places like Las Americas are more party friendly and Costa Adejo seemed like a good place for some quiet fun. In hindsight, we should have stayed in Las Americas or Fanabe. Costa Adejo is great place to be but so are other areas like Las Americas.  The benefit of staying in a place like Las Americas, is that you much more places you could walk too.  Costa Adejo is nice and secluded and you have nice beach walks. But if you need to travel somewhere you need a bus or car.
Good:

  • Great breakfast which was included
  • Nice cosy rooms
  • Staff were good but we did not have any issues
  • Free shuttle to Las Americas

Bad:

  • A bit away from most places. Note, it is not completely isolated. There are about 2-3 restaurants nearby and grocery stores as well.

Transportation

We decided not to rent a car and that worked out fine. Not having to drive in a foreign land is less stressful. However, if you are looking to cover more territory and want to do it cheaper and quicker, a car is a better choice. Driving seems fairly easy as the roads were well built and with good signs everywhere.

Food

The food in Tenerife seems to cater to the tourists. There are lots of Italian and American food places. If you are a vegetarian, the choices are limited but there is enough to get by. Being close to the coast also means there is lots of sea food.

Day 1

Travel into Tenerife.  Taxi from Airport (did not prebook, took one from the taxi stand) is around 25 Euros. Sit at the beach.

Day 2

We took the Royal Delfin tour  and it was a great experience as we got to see Dolphins and Whales in the wild just 30 min into the open sea. There are loads of whales and dolphins which call this part of the ocean home so it seems you are guaranteed to see some for sure. Also, they boat had a glass bottom viewing area to view the whales and dolphins under water. The tour operator was quite good and they also provided drinks and lunch as part of the trip. This was well worth the cost of trip.  If you have the choice, take the 2 hour tour. The 3 hour one which we took has a half hour for an ocean swim and in March that is not that ideal because it is not that hot.

Rest of Day 2 was another relaxing stroll and dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 3

The highlight was Mount Teide. It is 3718 meters high and is the highest mountain in Spain.  It is also the world's third largest ocean-island volcano and is still active!  On a clear day, the views are breathtaking. We took a tour bus and then the cable car to the top. If you are into hiking, then you must get a permit and try to go to the top of the volcano. That is the only way to get there. The drive from Costa Adejo is around 90 minutes. Having a car speeds things up as the tour bus will make stops at every hotel picking up guests.  The roads are good but a bit winding. In order to get to the top, you need to book tickets for the cable car. The advice is to book these tickets on the day as we heard reports of lack of refunds etc. If you have option to pick a day, check the wind speeds, as they don't run this on windy days. The views from top are quite amazing and worth the trip.  Make sure you pack a jacket or some warm clothing as it gets really cold on the top.

Other tips

  • Language is not a big problem as most places do speak some English.
  • Carry sun block
  • Some warm clothes for the trip to Mount Teide
  • There are lots of activities for Kids and adults like Snorkeling, Scuba diving, gliding, Parasailing, jetsking etc.
